Carbs vs EFI (By Riaan S)
If I had to tell you that EFI is better than Carbs, I would get a hell of a lot of critisizm and moaning from the Carburetor fans. The same goes vice versa. All I can do is show you the facts and proven dyno testing. I'm expecting alot of emails regarding this so go ahead and tell us your views on this article.
The main things about this argument is "Which makes more power?" or "Which is more reliable?". In my opinion, the only time I would recommend using a carb, is if you have an old car and would like to keep everything very simplistic. If your stuck in the middle of the road, there is a better chance you can make a plan with a carb than an EFI system. With all the new features, comes more things to troubleshoot. Also you might not have a laptop on hand to sort out the fuel injection programming etc. Luckily these days, many aftermarket fuel management systems are very reliable and if done probably, not much can go wrong.
So which makes more power? EFI. Yes indeed. We have done many carb to fuel injection conversions and have seen the results ourselves. A well tuned carburettor will work well but a well tuned EFI system will work even better. Have a look at an actual test been done: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/hardcore/0305em_holley/index.html
Carburetors are great for ideal conditions which don't change often. These conditions are actually very hard to find. EFI on the other hand can compensate for these conditions by getting input from the various sensors they contain i.e. water temperature, air temperature, and many others. If you have a carb, you will find that you will have to change jets and tune your carb to work with the current conditions.
